The project Stadtwirklichkeit was awarded with the Digital Sparks 2001 and nominated for the International browserday Award 2001.
STADTWIRKLICHKEIT is a platform for the construction of artificial worlds.
Using the metaphorism of Italo Calvinos »Invisible Cities» the application
requires the user to design their own »invisible city».
Whilst the visitor of the website meanders through abstract 3-dimensional
spaces (Quicktime-VR), five of Italo Calvinos »invisible Cities»
are described by voice and interactive audio installations. If the visitor
is attracted by a certain city, he might decide to move in. At this stage
he will be asked to imagine a city with its own order and possibilities. To
do so he describes his idea with his own words and uploads a picture of his
choice. Thus the visitor becomes an architect; his model becomes a virtual
space of the city. Represented by an abstract form, this space can be visited
by others.
We believe that reality is constituted through a joint process, is built by
settlements and concessions. Therefore each visitor of STADTWIRKLICHKEIT takes
part in the decision making process of how »real» or how virtual
the different models might become. Whilst just recently uploaded statements
(represented by an abstract form) are translucent and almost invisible, others,
which have been voted on, turn out to be more opaque and solid. This process
can also be reversed by »negative votes». In this case realities
become pale, are less and less visible and finally don't exist anymore.
You'll find the application and a detailed documentation on the project site STADTWIRKLICHKEIT. >>>
